The Secretariat of the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC) received a visit from a team of fisheries experts from the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at the FCWC Headquarters in Tema, Ghana on 30th September 2019.
The FAO team comprising Glenn Quelch, MCS and Compliance at FAO-Rome, Ramon Franques Artes, Faculty of Economics & Business at Universitat de Barcelona, Spain, were accompanied by Grace Charway of FAO-RAF Ghana to conduct an expert study mission to Ghana aimed at studying the unique transshipment practice involving industrial fishing vessels and small scale canoes often referred to as ‘Saiko fishing’ and to get a better understanding of the drivers of transshipment at sea and impacts on relevant Monitoring Control and Surveillance, MCS management measures.
The overall outcome of this study will form the basis for the formulation of global guidelines on best practices for regulating, monitoring and controlling transshipment to support policy decisions in fisheries management globally.
