Ghana: African Union supporting FCWC to review the regional plan of action for preventing, deterring and eliminating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing
Mr Samuel Quaatey, a proven fisheries management expert has been contracted by AU-IBAR to conduct an evaluation of the status of implementation and review of the regional plan of action for preventing, deterring and eliminating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing adopted in 2009, by the FCWC member countries.
Recommendation 9 of the FCWC 09thConference of Ministers formally requested the support of the African Union in the evaluation of the implementation of the 2009 FCWC Regional Plan of Action for combating IUU Fishing by the FCWC member states towards the re-formulation of a realistic updated IUU Plan of Action in tune with current realities and best practices.
In this regard, Mr Samuel Quaatey visited the FCWC headquarters and met with Mr Seraphin Dedi, Secretary General of FCWC.
This visit marks the beginning of the implementation of the AU support to the FCWC organization. The next step of the consultancy will be to visit all FCWC members: Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria, for their contribution to the evaluation process and agree on the new plan to be developed for full implementation in the region.
