The Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC) under the Improved Regional Fisheries Governance in West Africa project (PESCAO) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Regional Maritime University in Nungua, Accra, Ghana, to mutually contribute to a harmonized training programme for fisheries MCS officials in Western Africa.
In a short ceremony at the RMU campus on the 22nd February 2022, FCWC Secretary General, Seraphin Dedi, and the RMU Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Jethrow Brooks, signed the MoU to allow regular use of the Regional Maritime University facilties and expertise to build capacity of fisheries and related agencies to combat illegal fishing in the region. The activity fulfills one of the key result areas under the Improved Regional Fisheries Governance in West Africa (PESCAO) project and advances the objective to establish partnership with regional centres of excellence, to develop training modules addressing skills and knowledge gaps.
Speaking at the ceremony, FCWC Secretary-General Seraphin Dedi stated, “I thank the RMU for its commitment and hope that this collaboration will effectively support the capacity building of the Member States in the region during and even after the project ends.”
