A fishing agreement between the Mauritanian government and a Chinese company is destroying the livelihoods of local fishermen. That’s according to the Sea Shepherd conservation group who’ve published details of a 25 year contract between Mauritania and the Poly Hon Done Pelagic Fishery Company. Sea Shepherd says the agreement, which allows for unlimited fishing, threatens marine resources with no limits on the types of nets used or species of fish caught. In addition, the Chinese deal with Mauritania undermines the European Union’s agreement which provides for sustainable fishing under strict conditions.
