Elmina in the Central region will soon become a hub for the fishing industry in the country, President John Mahama has stated.
According to Mr. Mahama, the government is rolling out policies and programmes aimed at bettering the lives of fishermen and fishmongers.
President Mahama disclosed this during a ceremony to inaugurate the Elmina Fish Processing Plant. He said the project which was funded by the Exim Bank of India will transform the fishing sector in the locality.
“This fish processing plant is very important to fishermen in this area. This is because it has processing facility and packing plant. So the fishermen can process their fish and package them nicely for the market.”
President Mahama added the project will not only serve fishermen but fishmongers as well. “The plant also has cold rooms where fishermen can store the excess catch and sell later. It will also serve as a fish market because there are stores in the facility where our women can sell fish. And so I believe Elmina will become center for fish processing and marketing in Ghana.”
The President also paid tribute to the late former President John Mills who started the project. He assured residents all the projects the late president promised them will be delivered in his second term including a fish landing beach and a harbor.
President Mahama on his first day of the Central region tour also inaugurated a bridge over the Brenya Lagoon also in Elmina. Earlier he inaugurated two community day senior high schools at Diaso in the Upper Denkyira West constituency and Kyekyewere in Dunkwa.
