Six (6) regional entities took part in the meeting initiated by the ATLAFCO: the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission (SRFC), the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC), the Regional Commission of Fisheries of Gulf of Guinea (COREP), the Intergovernmental Organisation for Information and Cooperation for the Marketing of Fishery Products in Africa (INFOPECHE) and the Network for West Africa Fishing Policies (REPAO).
The meeting was marked by the presence of His Excellency Mr. Idelfonso BARRO, Secretary of State for Fisheries of the Republic of Guinea Bissau on behalf of the Minister of Fisheries and Animal Resources of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire, President of the Conference of Ministers of ATLAFCO, who after welcoming the participants, welcomed the initiative to build a synergy of actions between fisheries organizations in the region.
Through their presentations the four (4) above regional organisations and the Executive Secretariat of ATLAFCO agreed unanimously that the institutional and financial challenges they face, are hindering the achievement of withholding results.
In addition, the meeting considered that the proliferation of actors at sub-regional, regional, continental and international complicates the intervention in favor of good governance of the fisheries sector, including the realisation of duplicates during interventions.
The initiative resulted in the adoption and signing of a “Memorandum of Understanding for coordination between the institutions and the Regional Fisheries Organisations in ATLAFCO zone”.
However, the memorandum also remains open for accession by other programs and institutions involved in the fisheries sector for better fisheries governance across the region.
