In the framework of the implementation of the FAO technical cooperation project (TCP) on strengthening routine fisheries data collection in West Africa initiated for Member States of FCWC namely Liberia, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria, the international consultant Mr. de Graaf, visited Ghana from 7 to 13 August 2016.
The mission focused on the development of appropriate and cost effective sample based surveys for artisanal fisheries.
The data collected from frame surveys were examined and used to redesign existing data collection schemes, taking into consideration the budget limitations of the countries. The data collection schemes include at least all the target species covered by the CECAF scientific working groups.
In the same vein, national staff were trained in fisheries statistics concepts, data collection and basic principles of sample based surveys as well as to set up and use FAO OPEN ARTFISH and the FAO ODK mobile phone system.
On the project, Mr. Seraphin Dedi, Secretary General of FCWC, commented that routine data collection by member States regarding this project will enable FCWC set up a regional fisheries data collection centre and this will not only promote the fisheries sector but will also enhance collaboration in the sub region.
This activity was undertaken as per the inception workshop of the FAO-FCWC TCP held on 5 and 6 May 2016 in Accra, Ghana, attended by all member States of FCWC and FAO experts. The consultant will pursue its support in the other five countries of the Committee. The next step will be Benin and Togo by the end of August.
