APA-Nouakchott (Mauritania) Mauritania’s fish exports in 2009 reached up to US$303 million, said a senior official of the country’s fishing sector, in Nouadhibou.
This sector also generated some 40,000 direct and indirect employments and contributed to about 22% of revenue in foreign currencies during this period, said the financial and administrative director of the Mauritanian Fish Marketing Company (SMCP).
These data are contained in a conference report on the characteristics of the Mauritanian coast, held at the Nouadhibou High School II, as part of Mauritania’s golden jubilee celebrations.
The lecturer explained that Mauritanian sea waters are the meeting point between cold and warm currents ; this makes the temperature moderate and attracts dozens of fish species. The main importers of Mauritanian fish are the European Union and Japan.
