A delegation from the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC) led by the FCWC Secretary General Dr Antoine Gaston Djihinto visited Nigeria’s Federal Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Honourable Minister Adegboyega Oyetola, at the headquarters of the Ministry on 23 July 2024 in Abuja, Nigeria.
The visit marks the first time the Federal Minister and FCWC Secretary-General have met since the FCWC Secretary General assumed office, and since the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy was created.
The FCWC delegation, accompanied by TMT’s Executive Director, Dr Gareth Johnstone, and TMT’s West and Central Africa Coordinator, Viviane Koutob, also met with the Federal Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mr. Wellington o. Omoragbon to hold discussions on challenges in Nigeria’s marine fisheries and aquaculture sectors, and how Nigeria can better combat IUU fishing.
Deliberations were held on Nigeria’s possible participation in the region’s fisheries closed season, innovations to govern the artisanal fisheries sector, decent work in fisheries, and potential partnerships and collaboration in the future.
The Federal Minister gave a strong commitment to continue to support the FCWC’s activities henceforth, including through attendance at all regional meetings, and through supplying financial and human resources.
