The West African Association for the Development of Artisanal Fisheries (WADAF) has recently concluded series of stakeholders training in the fisheries sector at a ceremony held at the Bakau Community Centre and the Department of Fisheries in Banjul.
Since December 2015, WADAF has been implementing the project entitled: Strengthening fisheries, good governance within the artisanal fisheries professional organization (AFPO) in the seven member countries of the Sub-regional Fisheries Commission in West Africa. The project is a follow-up to the first phase rolled out between 2010 and 2013.
Speaking at both trainings, Musa Mbengue, executive secretary of WADAF, said the new project, which will last for three years, is expected to consolidate the impressive results of the first phrase.
According to him, the project aims to strengthen the professional and political skills of AFPO and their autonomy in order to improve their influence capacity on fisheries public policies in the seven West African countries namely; Cape Verde, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, covered by the Sub-regional Fisheries Commission.
“It is in this context that WADAF organized this restitution session of Module two to allow those trained to make a restitution of the training they received from the professional organization,” Mbengue stated.
He said similar trainings on module one was held in Senegal as well in Guinea Bissau.
For his part, Dawda Foday Saine, National Correspondent for the project, gave an overview of how the training was designed. He expressed appreciation to the WADAF secretariat for their continue support to the Artisanal Fisheries Sectors in the sub-region.
Alagie Cherno, Omar Joof and Geberial Gabis, all expressed similar sentiments.
