Nigerian aquaculture groups have joined together to establish the Amalgamated Association of Fish Farmers and Aquaculture of Nigeria, reports NTA.
The chairman of the association, Hussaini Roha, told News Agency of Nigeria that the merger of aquaculture groups under the new association was imperative to fast-track the development of the sector.
Nigeria produces around 100,000 metric tons of farmed fish annually. “Fish farming is one of the fastest growing agricultural enterprises in the country and its contribution to Nigeria’s GDP is significant,” said Roha.
Roha reckons Nigeria’s inland water mass, estimated at about 12.5 million hectares of inland waters, is capable of producing 512,000t of fish annually.
