The Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC), an inter- governmental organization whose objective is to ensure the sustainable development of the fisheries resources of the participating countries of Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria & Togo, is looking to appoint a Communications Officer to work in the FCWC offices in Tema, Ghana. This is a new position working mainly to provide services to a West Africa Task Force that is made up of the six countries of the FCWC as well as to provide general communications support to the FCWC offices.
The Communications Officer should be fluent in written and spoken French and English and have some experience of working in a communications environment. You will be working as part of FCWC Secretariat and will also work closely with the Stop Illegal Fishing communications team.
Essential skills & experience
- Fluent in written and spoken French and English
- Graduate level communications/public relations qualification
- Minimum 12 months of experience of working in a communications environment
- Fluent in written & spoken French and English as project information will need to be produced in both languages
- Excellent computer skills required in MS office software, including PowerPoint, Excel & Word. Knowledge of a design programme such as Publisher or Photoshop would be beneficial
- Confident communicator, articulate and able to communicate effectively
- Strong relationship management skills
- Self-motivated with strong time management and organisational skills, including the ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changing priorities
- Knowledge of various communications channels and techniques, particularly digital and social media
- Able to write engaging and accurate copy for a range of marketing materials
- including newsletter content, copy for blogs and web pages
Key responsibilities include
- Active translation of messages between participating countries and the technical team on the project communications platform as they occur, ensuring that all information is available in English and French.
- Coordinate regular digital and print content – create email newsletters, website and social media contents
- Monitor activity in national, regional and international news media, digital channels and social media mainly on issue related to fisheries sector development.
- Circulate press roundups, guidance documents, and project communication
- Provide general editorial, proofreading and writing support across the office
- Devising and managing communication campaigns in the six project countries
- Organize and manage press events, source images and clear permission for their use
- Writing and dissemination of press releases, aassist with the organisation of events and conferences as necessary, managing stock and distribution of print materials
- Oversee the design and production of promotional material.
