8-9 January 2023 – Takoradi, Ghana – As an implementing partner in the Improving Fisheries Governance in Ghana and the Wider Subregion (IFG) project, the FCWC is participating in a Ghana national multi-stakeholder workshop on IUU fishing prosecution to deepen stakeholders’ understanding of the prosecutorial chain.
The main discussion points being addressed include the perception that the prosecutions of fisheries offenses are largely unsuccessful, the span of IUU fishing offenses (from light fishing to the indiscriminate use of chemicals and explosives), and the measures being taken to address them.
The participants of the meeting include representatives from Ghana’s Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture (MOFAD) and Fisheries Commission, the Fisheries Enforcement Unit, Marine Police, Navy, Air Force, Attorney General’s Department, Judiciary Service, District Police Commanders, Fisheries Enforcement Unit, Maritime Authority, Ports and Harbors Authority, Fisher Associations, ENI, Tullow & Partners. A key outcome is to identify existing gaps in the prosecutorial chain and to agree on a roadmap for collaborative IUU deterrence.
