The Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea Secretariat received a visit from a team from the Centre for Maritime Law and Security (CEMLAWS) Africa to share each organization’s activities and to discuss possible avenues for collaboration.
CEMLAWS Africa is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit institution based in Ghana with a continental and global reach that helps improve ocean governance and maritime security in Africa.
During his presentation on the FCWC’s institutional framework and activities, FCWC Secretary General, Seraphin Dedi said “there is a need for capacity building on, legal framework and advocacy with stakeholders in fisheries sustainability. Therefore, let us start working on the impacts of the current fisheries management measures to inform policy development.”
Commenting on the FCWC’s activities, Executive Director of CEMLAWS, Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali said “we cannot help to but to see the great significance of the FCWC. We think there are many areas that we can learn and deepen our understanding of fisheries with you and also to support some of the things that you do.”
The two organizations have committed to sharing documents and firming up plans to collaborate on the observer training programs and to monitor the implementation of the Ghana fisheries management plan, including the close seasons measures in the short term.
