The Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea at its annual Conference of Ministers held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire from 15 – 17 December 2021, has chosen “Using innovative technology to increase oversight of safe, fair and legal fishing.”
The Conference of Ministers brought together Ministers for fisheries or their representatives to review annual report and adopt recommendations to promote régional cooperation in West Africa.
FCWC Secretary-General, Seraphin Dedi, in his speech during the conference explained that “We selected a technology-focused theme for 2022 to marketing the FCWC regional MCS centre with AIS and VMS tools to track vessels in the region also, because the region demonstrated how technology is used to surmount the challenges that the COVID-19 presents to our activities of regional cooperation and capacity building.”
In line with the theme, the FCWC developed communication materials to further explain the kinds of technologies being used to increase oversight of the fisheries sector and what each technology involves. [link here].
