Minister of State for the Federal Capital, Territory, Akinjide Olajumoke, has distributed various fishery input products worth N17million to fish farmer and traders in the FCT in order to ensure increased access to fish by consumers in the territory.
The minister noted that fishes have made significant contribution in promoting food security and enhancing poverty alleviation in FCT and the country in general.
She explained that the sub-sector has also served as a high employer of labour in the territory with about 1million FCT resident depending on fish nutrients, while a reasonable number of the figure are engaged in fish production and marketing .
According to her, the essence of fish diet cannot be over emphasized due to its ability to strengthen capacity as well as withstand the effects of HIV/AIDS with recent nutritional studies that states that fish contains proteins, vitamins and minerals.
Secretary, FCT Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Mrs Olvadi Bema Madayi, said the distribution of the items was made to fish farmers, traders and marketers. Items donated included deep freezers, smoking kiln water pumps and punlabs, among others.
