Namibia has endorsed a Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for seals for 2019 to 60,000 pups and 8,000 bulls during the seal harvesting season, according to the country’s 14th Cabinet resolutions released Wednesday.
Namibia’s Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources determined the TAC and reduced the pup figures from 80,000, while the bulls increased from 6,000 to 8,000.
The harvesting season commenced on July 1 and will conclude on Nov. 15.
Namibia harvests seals at Cape Cross, on the country’s Skeleton Coast to control the population, as seals feed on fish species and challenge the availability of fish for export and local consumption, despite facing fierce criticism from international animal welfare organizations for the exercise.
