The Hon Minister Nandcoomar Bodha officially launched the E€OFISH programme on 9 December 2020 at Le Suffren Hotel & Marina. This launching ceremony marks a new chapter in regional cooperation to promote sustainable fishing in Eastern Africa, Southern Africa and Indian Ocean (EA-SA-IO) region. The E€OFISH programme will facilitate the establishment of policies and frameworks for a sustainable management of fisheries and support efforts to combat illegal fishing.
The E€OFISH programme is funded by the European Union to the tune of € 28 million. It will be implemented until September 2024 by the Indian Ocean Commission in collaboration with the Lake Tanganyika Agency (LTA), the Lake Victoria Fishery Organization (LVFO), the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), the East African Community (EAC), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), the Southern African Development Community (SADC) as well as the South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission (SWIOFC).
The Hon Minister delivered the keynote address on that occasion. He expressed the wish that the various stakeholders take full advantage of the potential of the fisheries sector. He also underlined the importance of having a coherent national and regional policy on fisheries.
The E€OFISH programme website (www.ecofish-programme.org) was launched by the Hon Minister and a publication on the programme by Hon Sudheer Maudhoo, Minister of Blue Economy, Marine Resources, Fisheries and Shipping.
