A big dead fish, probably a whale, which is about 10 metres long, was washed ashore on the early hours of Wednesday at Nkontompo, a predominantly fishing community near Sekondi. It attracted many people from all walks of life to the beach.
Mr Ahmed Sulley, Head of the Environmental Health Department of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, led a team from the department to disinfect the decomposing fish. The team also supervised the digging of a grave to bury the fish.
Speaking to the media, Mr Sulley said the fish was probably killed by the propeller of ship at high sea. He allayed fears that the fish would spread diseases in the area.
Mr Justice Cobbinah, a former assembly member for Nkontompo said the fish was found on the beach around 03:30 hours.
He said some residents are of the belief that the presence of the fish in the area is a good omen signifying the bumper harvest of fish.
