The Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC) participated in a regional fisheries transparency gathering organized by Global Fishing Watch in Dakar, Senegal, from 12–13 May 2026. The meeting brought together key fisheries stakeholders from across West and Central Africa, including Regional Fisheries Bodies such as the Sub-Regional Fisheries Commission (SRFC) and the Regional Fisheries Commission for the Gulf of Guinea (COREP), alongside technical and development partners.
The Dakar gathering focused on strengthening fisheries transparency and improving regional cooperation in the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Discussions explored practical tools and approaches to support sustainable fisheries governance, including open data systems, information sharing mechanisms, and the expanded use of Automatic Identification System (AIS) and Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) technologies to enhance monitoring, control, and surveillance across the Gulf of Guinea.
For the FCWC, participation in the initiative reinforced its ongoing commitment to modernizing fisheries oversight through stronger regional collaboration and technology-driven solutions. Representatives of the three Regional Fisheries Bodies exchanged experiences and lessons learned on national and regional approaches to improving transparency in the fisheries sector, while also identifying opportunities for deeper cooperation and alignment.
Participants emphasized the importance of collective action in safeguarding fish stocks and marine ecosystems that support millions of livelihoods and contribute significantly to food security across the region. The meeting also served as a sub-regional learning platform, enabling stakeholders to discuss common challenges and share innovative practices for improving fisheries governance.
The FCWC actively contributed to discussions on enhancing accountability and sustainability in fisheries management through data sharing, transparency tools, and strengthened institutional cooperation. Participants committed to continuing technical collaboration beyond the Dakar meeting, with the FCWC expected to play an active role in follow-up activities and regional coordination efforts.
The initiative forms part of broader regional efforts to strengthen ocean governance and combat IUU fishing through transparency, cooperation, and technology.
